A graduate of the University of Houston, Tommy Rios has 23 years of coaching physical education and athletics at the middle school and elementary levels. After 15 years as the Director of the Parks and Recreation volleyball camps for the city of Corpus Christi, he joined the St. James family and has been raising up Jaguars since 2003.He advises every scholar, who is in 4th, 5th, and 6th grade, to take the opportunity to participate in at least one of the after school sports that is available to them. Volleyball, basketball, and track are open to all, while soccer is available only in 6th grade. Scholars will not only learn the skills that it takes to participate in each sport, but will also gain an understanding of what it takes to be part of a team and to play with a sense of sportsmanship.7th and 8th grade athletics require a greater commitment to each sport and to the team. Scholars will be placed in situations where they have the opportunity to succeed, but also a challenging atmosphere that begins preparing them for high school athletics. Emphasis is placed on building skills, and there is a high expectation that scholars be both leaders and team players. The sense of sportsmanship that begins in the lower grades becomes more important as students compete. At St. James, we look to develop a both a competitive and compassionate scholar.
