Scholarships, Opportunity Grants, Support Active Military Grants, and Need-Based Financial Aid

SCHOLARSHIPS, OPPORTUNITY GRANTS, SUPPORT ACTIVE MILITARY GRANTS, AND NEED-BASED FINANCIAL AID

St. James offers tuition assistance each year. Awards are either in the form of named scholarships, Opportunity Grants, SAM Grants, or need-based financial aid. These funds come from special donations and the St. James endowment.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Several named scholarships are awarded each year. Criteria for these awards vary. The following four awards are based solely on scholarship, merit, and leadership criteria, not on financial need.

David Dennett Welch Scholarship
(Competitive for a rising 7th grader)
The David Dennett Welch Competitive Scholarship was established in 1988 in memory of David Dennett Welch, son of Bob and Ruth Welch. A lifelong member of The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd and a track star and honor graduate of King High School, David graduated from Southern Methodist University with an undergraduate degree in Economics and a master’s degree in Finance. At the time of his death, he was a Fiscal Program Specialist for the Department of the Interior.

John E. Nisbet, Jr. Scholarship
(Academic, Service, Enthusiasm for a rising 7th grader)
The John E. Nisbet, Jr. Academic Scholarship was created with an endowment made by an anonymous donor. This scholarship is named in memory of Captain John E. Nisbet, Jr., the son of (Pinky) and Elizabeth Nisbet. A 1972 alumnus of St. James, John was a graduate of Texas A&M University, where he served in the Corps of Cadets as Company Commander, Ross Volunteer, and Yell Leader. As a Marine Corps Captain, John E. Nisbet, Jr. was serving as a pilot when he was killed.

The H. Palmer Bell Scholarship
(Academic, Spiritual for a rising 7th grader)
The H. Palmer Bell Scholarship was established in 2008 in honor of the St. James Headmaster who served from 1996-2008.  The intent of this award is to honor a student who best exemplifies the St. James School mission. The award is giving to a student who is reaching his or her full potential and who demonstrates a balanced life academically, physically and spiritually.

The Jane Addams Guild Scholarship
(Academic, Creativity, Character for a rising 5th grader)
The Jane Addams Guild Scholarship was created in 1998 through a gift from the Jane Addams Guild and is named in its honor. A popular Guild at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd for fifty years, the Jane Addams Guild coordinated the creative efforts of many talented women. The handwork created by the group was sold and the income was used to support seminarians studying throughout the United States. Through the Jane Addams Guild Scholarship, the Guild seeks to foster academic excellence, student creativity, and Christian spiritual values in today’s youth.

OPPORTUNITY GRANTS

St. James Opportunity Grants are awarded to students in grades 3-8 who can demonstrate that they would be assets to our School (through an application, essay writing, and interview process), show great promise of growing up to be significant contributors to the larger community, and whose families make a difference in the larger community and incomes fall within the independent school middle income parameters. This grant is renewable for students who remain in good standing and eligible for families needing tuition assistance with incomes between $60,000 and $115,000. Grants of $3,250, $6,000, or $7,500 are awarded according to the number of children attending St. James Episcopal School. REQUIREMENTS: After turning in your Application for Admission, complete the St. James Opportunity Grant Application (download below) and turn in all required information as stated on the application.

SUPPORT ACTIVE MILITARY GRANTS (SAM GRANTS)

A SAM Grant is in recognition of those who actively serve in the defense of our country. St. James feels that our military bear a special burden in the education of their children because of multiple, short deployments in a variety of settings. A SAM Grant is intended to make the premier education available in the Corpus Christi area accessible to families whose lives are dedicated to keeping our nation free, whose values are strong, and whose sense of duty and responsibility are keen and clear. SAM Grants are available to any active duty personnel in any branch of the armed forces stationed in the Corpus Christi area and represent a 25% reduction in the announced tuition for the first student, 35% reduction for two students, and a 45% reduction for three students. Like our other tuition assistant programs, students must be developmentally and academically ready for the rigors of a St. James education and are renewable as long as the student’s parent is deployed in our area. REQUIREMENTS: After turning in your Application for Admission, complete the Support Active Military Grant Application (download below) and give St. James proof of your military status.

FINANCIAL AID (NEED-BASED)

Funds are available from the School to help the families most in need of tuition assistance; additional funds are occasionally set aside by the Church of the Good Shepherd for its parishioners. If you wish to apply for financial aid you must register at FACTS Management. To go directly to the FACTS Financial Aid Application, please click here. All materials are completed online to initiate the financial aid process. The applications for admission and for financial aid are separate processes and must be completed separately.  The separation of these applications is intentional so there can be no confusion that admission to St. James is NOT based upon the ability to pay tuition.

The following named awards are based solely on financial need. To qualify for awards based upon financial need, parents or responsibility guardians MUST RE-APPLY EACH YEAR BY:

Robert Douglass Browning Scholarship
The Robert Douglass Browning Scholarship is a perpetual scholarship endowed by Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Douglass in memory of their grandson Robert Douglass Browning, a lifelong member of The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, and a student at St. James from Preschool 4-year-olds through his 6th grade graduation in 1974. Robert Douglass Browning received the James Avery ring for outstanding service to the Church as an acolyte in 1986. He was a senior at Richard King High School at the time of his death.

John Cram Scholarship
Given by an anonymous donor, the John Cram Scholarship was created shortly after John Cram’s death from leukemia in 1971. St. James Episcopal School played an important role in John’s life. It provided a supportive, Christian, and educational background that enabled him to meet the challenges in his young life. Established to help students receive an excellent education as well as moral and social skills, the John Cram Scholarship benefits children of parishioners at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd and St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church.
