Curriculum
St. James serves developmentally ready and academically above average children. The school uses developmentally appropriate testing prior to admission to ensure prospective students will be well served through our advanced curriculum.
The St. James curriculum emphasizes the development of the individual student, while it provides an exceptional foundation in reading, language arts, spelling, writing, mathematics, geography, history, natural sciences and foreign language. Robust programs in music, art and physical education are integral to the overall curriculum. Class size is limited to ensure maximum opportunity for the individualization of instruction.
In keeping with its educational philosophy and with the support of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, the school provides foundational spiritual formation in the Christian tradition and training in life skills. Morning devotionals and chapel services are included in the weekly schedule.
In the Preschool, which encompasses two year olds (PS2) through Jr. Kindergarten (Jr.K), our carefully designed program focuses on the needs of the student while laying the foundation for later learning.
The Lower School encompassing Kindergarten - Grade 4, offers a flexible, interdisciplinary academic program that is innovative in its approach to providing an exceptional academic preparation. The school believes that learning how to learn, loving to learn and enjoying the discipline of learning are vital components of a quality elementary education.
The Middle School Program, Grades 5-8, offers a superior academic program, including an enriched interdisciplinary curriculum and many opportunities for exploratory activities. St. James seeks to prepare qualified students to be successful in the most rigorous academic programs nationally. The middle school curriculum emphasizes the special intellectual, social, emotional and physical needs of early adolescence and utilizes a variety of outdoor education trips to expand the walls of the classroom.
